WELLPATH AND INADEQUATE MEDICAL CARE

By Stanley Donald

Senior Law Clerk for Prisoners

Norfolk Inmate Council Unit Representative

On January 10, 2023, the inmates of MCI-Norfolk prison declared Wellpath Medical Services inadequate. The Inmate Council of MCI-Norfolk, who represents the entire inmate population, took a vote and unanimously declared Wellpath provides inadequate medical care.

A survey was conduct and the results were troubling. It was discovered that Wellpath medical staff did not answer sick slips or medical grievances in a timely way, and elderly inmates with chronic and severe medical problems are not being properly treated.

Inmates who were infected with Covid have became worse with long-term covid symptoms, nerve damage, and blurry eyesight,  which has made several inmates unable to walk properly.

It looks like a war-zone with inmates walking slowly around  the prison with wheel-walkers, canes, and crutches.

No real medical treatment is being provided. An inmate died and ten inmates prayed and cried for him in the prison yard. When the government is going recognize this catastrophe and take action. The first step would be to inquire why Wellpath is providing inadequate medical care.

NORFOLK INMATE COUNCIL UNIT REPRESENTATIVE OF 4-1

MOTION TO DECLARE WELLPATH AN INADEQUATE MEDICAL PROVIDER FOR THE INMATE POPULATION OF MCI-NORFOLK

Introduction:

The Unit Representative from Unit 4-1, hereby respectfully move that the Norfolk Inmate Council and General Assembly take a vote and declare Wellpath Medical Contractor for D.O.C. an inadequate medical provider due to Wellpath’s medical staff’s failure to provide adequate medical care to inmates with chronic medical conditions, and failure to provide adequate medical care to the inmate population of MCI-Norfolk.

Background:

On November 28,2022, the Unit Representative of 4-1, who has knowledge of civil and criminal law, examined medical surveys of  over 5O inmates and discovered that Wellpath medical staff in MCI-Norfolk do not timely answer sick slips, medical grievances, and does not provide timely medical treatment which has resulted in inmates medical problems becoming worst during covid pandemic; and it has been discovered that several inmates are suffering serious medical problems ever since Wellpath has become the medical provider.

Exhausted Remedies:

Over the past two years several lawsuits has been filed against Wellpath and the Unit Representative of 4-1, has notified Wellpath and D.O.C. Administration of Wellpath’s failure to address the inadequate medical care through pending lawsuits.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the undersigned Unit Representative of 4-1 requests that this body vote to declare Wellpath an inadequate medical provider for the inmate population of MCI-Norfolk’s health and safety in order for a State government and Federal government investigation to be requested through an inquiry made by this undersigned Unit Representative and others.

Respectfully Submitted,
