NLG Legal Observers®

What We Do & Who We Are

NLG Legal Observers® program, established in 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement, provides trained Legal Observers® to progressive political actions and demonstrations where people exercise their 1st Amendment rights to Free Speech and Assembly.

Trained Legal Observers® (LO) are an integral part of NLG legal teams representing activists who are targeted or arrested by law enforcement.

Any legal professional or political activist who supports the 1st Amendment rights can participate in the LO training and then serve as a Legal Observers® at protests that are approved by the NLG-Massachusetts Chapter.

By wearing a neon green hat, a Legal Observer® becomes eyes and ears of the NLG-Massachusetts Chapter’s legal team.

Legal Observers® serve two related but distinct functions:

  • Can deter law enforcement misconduct
  • Monitor and record instances of law enforcement misconduct
