On July 9, 2019 at the Cambridge YMCA library, two National Lawyers Guild members presented “A Trumped-Up Crisis at the Border”. Victor Aronow, one of the co-founders of the Massachusetts Chapter of the NLG, lives in Phoenix, Arizona and runs the non-profit Refugee Aid, established by the NLG in Arizona. With migrants crossing the southern border at unprecedented numbers, the need for food, clothing and shelter for those non detained people far outweighs what one community can do. Victor gave a detailed explanation of how our immigration crisis became so severe and detailed ways that people near and far can help provide humanitarian aid.
Professor Hillary Farber spent 4 months at the Mexico-Arizona border representing detained immigrants in removal proceedings as a volunteer lawyer with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project. Hillary discussed the situation from one side of the border to the other for migrant families and people seeking asylum in the U.S. With so many people crossing at the southern border there is huge need for humanitarian aid whether that is roaming the desert looking for migrants in need of medical assistance or water and food or helping families in nearby border towns such as Tucson transition from release from Customs & Border Protection (CBP) to relocating within the country to then fight their immigration removal proceeding.
